Terrible lies of omission were told at the global warming conference in Paris about my chickens. We are squawking RED HOT about this!
THESE TWO MEAT BIRD LADIES ARE SMARTER THAN PEOPLE WHO SAY MEAT IS BAD FOR THE EARTH. THEY ARE SMART FORAGERS WHO EAT FOOD ALREADY THERE AND MAKE MORE (BUGS AND PLANTS) WITH THEIR POOP. HERE, AN OLDER HEN CAME TO SHOW THE YOUNGER ONE HATCHING. THOSE WHO MISUNDERSTAND AGRICULTURE FAIL TO COUNT ALL THE WAYS THAT ANIMALS RECYCLE, CREATE AND FACILITATE TILLAGE ARE LYING TO YOU. THESE HENS COULD TEACH OBAMA A LOT ABOUT USE AND REUSE OF CARBON ON A FARM.
The whole recent Paris event and the issue of global warming as reported is a total crock of corporate public relations. I am so sick to death of “don’t eat meat” as one of the big takeaways that the idiot mainstream media provided from Paris. The idea that removing animals from agriculture can work shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how farming works and should work, not just by the media but by the science and environmental community. The entire system needs change. Adding more solar and sorting your trash help, sure. But this little stuff distorts and ignores the cause and the solution.
THIS DUCK WANTS TO BE ONE OF MY HAPPY MEAT BIRDS. THESE CHICKENS WOULD LIVE LIVES OF MISERY IF RAISED BY INDUSTRY. PLUS, LOTS OF CARBON WOULD BE WASTED TRUCKING THEM AROUND. HERE, THEY ARE HAPPY, GOOD FOOD FOR YOU, THEMSELVES AND THE PLANET.
Here is the truth.
Global warming is caused almost entirely by the endless consumption- free trade- growth economy. All political systems know this type of economy can’t work in the long run, but none are willing to suggest any reduction in growth, no reduction in appalling waste, no efforts whatsoever to reduce transportation waste. If the market allows a chicken to be sent to China, processed, sent back to USA and shipped all over, that’s fine, despite the phenomenal carbon cost. That cost needs to be taxed in. Growth needs to be reigned in. The only thing that never stops growing is cancer, my friend Ted Tanner reminded me after reading this article.
It can be turned back only by reducing consumption, reversing growth and going back to old fashioned farm living where animals and plants and humans work together without much outside input.
Instead we find inoffensive little things people can do, like eating your vegetables based on how much carbon they sequester. And not realizing that cattle, chickens and pigs play a key role in tillage and “naturally” fertilizing plants (much more natural than carbon producing and toxic chemicals used in industrial farming). They propose taking animals out of agriculture without having the slightest idea on the incredibly symbiotic role pasture cows play with pasture, the way chickens eat bugs, fertilize the soil and create even more insects in old fashioned agriculture.
Ok you are saying, I subscribed to a chicken blog. What does global warming have to do with chickens.? EVERYTHING. This article will shortly be entirely about a world where eating locally raised meat chickens can be at the heart of saving the world. Don’t chicken out just yet.
What is the cause of global warming and most wars?
It is the consumption economy. It is the idea that the economy must get bigger by a factor of 1 to 5 percent every year. Every nation’s economy. Or simply; spend, spend, expand and expand. Get to every corner of the world and finagle their resources so our people can eat more garbage food, buy cheap crap from China at Walmart and throw it away in 6 months. The coast is unearthing tons of natural resources, running thousands of factories belching smoke and drinking petrol. All to make disposable products that used to be durable products. All to create food using billions of barrels of oil instead of traditional pasture symbiosis between plants and animals.
It’s a nasty, selfish way to live by definition. No thought to the future is included in it. Food is part poison. Humans are isolated from their food production, their impact on the earth and their wastes to the point they think it all happens by magic.
The modern growth economy has getting much nastier every year since about 1980. The rich get richer is part of it and the poor get poorer. Prior to 1800, all mankind lived for 10,000 years in a mostly zero growth economic system. True, people had a LOT less. The 19th century was a very slow growth economy where people believed in saving and the principle of waste not- want not.
That went out the window after WWII. Conservatism ended too as a meaningful force. Waste not, want not was banished from the national political dialogue. The GOP switched from being against foreign wars and shipping jobs overseas to being the primary advocate of both.
Our world exists on the following principle, buy, buy, buy and throw away and buy some more. The buying creates more stuff and more money. Make lots of money and spend it all on credit, is the theme, both for individuals and nations. Now, that has grown to a free trade world where every country expects to have way too much stuff and grow every year.
If a country grows at the conservative rate of 3 percent per year, the entire economy will double in 24 years. Then it grows exponentially!
That means we would be using twice the amount of energy in two decades, as would every other nation. That is where we are headed. There is not that much energy in the world, even with solar panels and eating veggies instead of beef cows.
The Democrats have paradoxically hitched all their progressive visions to the growth economy. Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton embraced Ronald Reagan, George Bush and NAFTA in one of the most disgusting visions of hegemony ever. Both parties are the enemies of the future folks, as is Wall Street. Al Gore tells us all about global warming but HE ALWAYS SUPPORTED LIMITLESS FREE TRADE. WTF??????
Reagan-Clinton-Bush-Obama-Gore’s NAFTA replaced traditional Mexican farm economies with gigantic scaled American operations and a drug selling economy. Obama and Jerry Brown push for solar and wind, while fully supporting endless consumption and free trade. Do they really want to change the direction of global warming? I say because they don’t put growth on the table to slow down and industrial farming on the table for reform, the answer is NO. Democrats are as worthless as Republicans for leading us to the future. Doubter? I say even if you are fool enough to doubt global warming, go ahead forget about it, but be a real conservative, don’t waste your children’s future by walking through that door at Walmart or filling up your basket at Amazon.
The Democrats and the PETA folks and the rest promoting not eating beef as the solution to climate change need to go back and review Physics 101 and The Conservation of Matter. The only way mankind is contributing to Climate Change is by digging up stored carbon in oil and other mined materials and turning it loose in the form of pollution. This includes use of chemical and petrol in industrial farming. There is no creation of matter in biodynamic farming! The GOP needs to go to OZ and ask the Wizard for a brain. There are no conservatives today, no traditional value Americans. We get HorseTrump about gays and such, but no real values from the right. And there are no liberals other than Greens and maybe Bernie, only phony neo-libs who believe in conquering the world in the name of peace.
The leaders of our world of all political parties, including the new Golden Boy in Canada follows the following illogical conundrum.
- Everybody (both parties) agree that we have to have at least 3 percent growth. All say we have to have free trade, meaning everybody else is growing just as fast. Nobody anywhere can propose limiting growth.
- HOWEVER. Almost everybody also agrees that growth must have limits. That’s the whole theme of global warming and environmental degradation. There are no true conservatives anywhere, or they would human enough to say…slow down… conserve for the future.
Bernie Sanders says some of this, but he doesn’t propose changing the growth economy, so he does not go far enough as the only conservative in the political race. (He gets more points because he favors limiting wars, another conservative principle shared by Rand Paul. Bernie is the first guy to have spoken about reality in any recent election, to doubt free trade. But we need everybody to be to the left of Bernie, that is more conservative and more traditional.
Number 1 totally contradicts number 2. Nobody can say growth must go despite the facts. We talk like we will have to find another PLANET someday because the growth economy will consume this one. What an idiot fantasy!
Do with less! Do things locally!
I’ll show how a local slow growth economy can greatly reduce war, environmental degradation and global warming. Here is the point where my meat chickens come in to help save the world!
One of the sins of industrial farming was secretive creation of a gigantic, sickly meat chicken that they feed the world. And yes, it feeds the world now. But we could do it better.
Here is the important point:
The monster industrial chicken produces more energy and uses less carbon than any agricultural animal… It’s already figuring HUGE in saving the world from starvation. HUGE is the word for this chicken.
The industrial chicken that grows to its Frankensteinish full size in 6 weeks, nuking its own legs and often remaining miserable and stationery. They are literally peeping baby chicks with mammoth bodies when they are slaughtered for your dinner. The ridicously shoddy breeding that has produced them gives them all weak hearts. They breathe hard and their combs turn purple from congestive heart failure.
They are secret, neglected and locked away from the news media and eating public. If you had the chance to meet one like I do every day, you would find them gentle, sweet and even rather smart. If you read the scanty corporate produced literature on them, their corporate masters call them dirty, stupid and unable to survive on their own. More than 10 billion of them live and die every year on earth. They have quickly surpassed all other farm animals in importance as the world’s number one protein source.
No self-respecting, illiterate hillbilly farmer of old would ever have thought of breeding any animals whose legs often break and whose hearts are weak. They just weren’t that mean and they had pride in their animals. They would be embarrassed if the chicken they made had to struggle to live natural lives.
Corporate persons normally can’t blush and simply don’t have natural ethics that exist in every living being on earth, including insects. Yet, their genetic monstrosity could also be humanity’s opportunity to not just feed itself, but also recreate healthy local economies.
But I found out their secret monster given a few more weeks of life becomes a real chicken, slowing down in growth and learning to deal with its body. I raise them out back. They eat bugs, grass and natural foods for 1/3 to 2/3 of their diet depending on the season. Give access to green pasture, they will eat that for ¾ of their diet all year round. They exercise every day and get bigger than the industrial chicken. (you can meet them if you don’t believe me. You might not believe what you see!). I breed them too. The industry says this is impossible. Industry does not share its latest, or even recent meat birds with the public. But what they share is enough to beat them at their own game.
Currently, we have to buy our chicks in this country through the mail, preloaded with horrible diseases. Almost all come with Marek’s disease (a whole separate blog story there), bacterial sticky butt and perhaps salmonella or campylobacter.
I am currently breeding and hatching my own strain of meat chickens. They grow a little slower but are much healthier for you and themselves than any from a hatchery. Packed conditions are very bad in terms of disease, as is global scale. My chickens are much stronger. Hybrid strength is real. So is the genetic strength of the original chickens, such as the Malay, which we have bred into our meat chickens. This adds thousands of genes to the inbred meat chicken.
INDUSTRY SAYS THEIR MEAT BIRDS CAN’T BREED. I AM HERE TO SHOW HOW GOOD THE HYBIRDS CAN BE. (OK, THEY ARE A LITTLE MUDDY TODAY)
Small towns can take these locally bred meat chickens and raise them free range and natural. Industry already has bred it to have this amazing feed ratio that makes it nearly carbon neutral. But their birds eat grains trucked in (using carbon). They are too close together, sick and stressed, creating new strains of deadly diseases. When slaughtered, they are transported. When sold at grocery, they are transported again, sometimes across the world. This has a ridiculously high carbon cost. Oil is burned in every trip. Instead, sell the chickens on the farm. Instead of buying trucked in industrial grain, let them eat from your yard and buy/trade from your neighbor. Joel Salatin, a rare smart and wise man of our times, points out that prior to the growth era, there were no supermarkets. Where was the food? On the farms!!
To have this kind of chicken economy, every small town should have a laboratory, or access to a great state lab like UC Davis for California. The USDA and farm advisers should be retrained and repurposed for local farming to remove industry brainwashing. (Another whole blog).
People should learn to trade again, as farmers do and have always done. Grow some oregano for my chickens, sell some and Ill give you some chickens. (It’s as effective as antibiotics and more than probiotics.) Farmers with cows can produce probiotic rich sour milk for chickens and people too, at least in time.
You see, we can take this Frankenchicken away from these Vaderish industrial “farming” monstrosities and raise it naturally to empower small towns in in a new era.
American small towns essentially saved the world 1900-1945. Europe had grown too fast, become too impersonal and proceeded to commit suicide- twice.
We had small banks, small towns and genuine economic power. We don’t anymore. But we could get it back. Europe once had local, agrarian economies too.
Instead of having a “fix global warming” conference in Paris and then spend the whole time working around the reason for global warming, let’s have a series of different conferences.
Number one is doing with less.
Number two is how to create local economies.
Number three is how to tax predators like Walmart out of business. I propose a $1 per mile tax on all goods for all food and retail outlets for all shipping over 100 miles. Stuff needs to be made and consumed at home. And we need like 1/10th the stuff we have.
Some corporations we want to be big, like oil, or computers to cover the liability and research.
Number 4 would be to recreate local manufacturing and local economic strength. Single Payer insurance would be the first step. Then I could hire people and not worry about the primary killer of local startups- workman’s comp. The $1 per mile tax would allow local manufacturing again. Currently if I invent and manufacture something, somebody will rip it off, make it in China and ship to US for less than the cost of raw materials. This has stifled American creativity.
Number 5 is to wrench the USDA away from industry and educate people about the fact that Salatin-style old fashioned farming is actually a view of the future as much as the past. Industrial farming with all its carbon based trucking and its removal of both plants and animals from natural systems of carbon recycling is a view of the apocalypse. We need studies of how we can feed the world by converting to sustainable farming.
Lots of people returning to the occupations of the past? Don’t laugh. Change is coming. Growth’s limits say so.
Rather than dwell on the already documented horrors of corporate chicken farming, I hope to launch a nationwide army of small chicken growers to feed America. The world? Many are already doing this, mostly in the UK.
After the current era of endless free trade and its brother— imperialism and war ends. Its sooner than you think. The inheritance economy will go.
The New York Times in early Dec. 2015 published the only piece I have ever seen on growth versus no growth and even degrowth. The newspaper naturally concludes we can’t go back to a world without growth.
They are wrong that we can’t reverse growth. Mathematics says we have to. Civilization will do what is HAS to do to survive. The Times is also are dead wrong about saying that wars are caused by zero growth economies. The article says the only way to get ahead in that kind of system is to attack your neighbors. Hilariously in its errant nature, the Times tells us that TRADE provided a peaceful alternative. First of all, trade existed in all economies Second, many, many wars have been caused by trade disputes, perhaps more than trade has prevented.
So get rid of free trade, not by protectionism but by empowering local economies in very specific ways. Let computers and cars and other necessary compete worldwide. Make it impossible for food or wasteful consumer items to do so.
That brings us back to eating meat. . Home raised chickens in my view are great at taking raw soil and convert the bugs and “weeds” into fertile ground for veggies that does not need chemical fertilizers. .Cows? Ok, let me finish with a criticique of the twisted anti-meat take on global warming Cattle, which turn grass into protein are named as a primary cause of global warming. Yes, their stomachs emit gasses from this process. But if this carbon conversion did not occur here, it would occur somewhere else. Instead it happens in the fields, the place where their manure as protein creates wonderful vegetable foods of all kinds. Humans eat kale and it would decompose and release gasses. In the bizarre world of global warming accounting, one kind of carbon counts and another does not. We all make impacts on this earth and we are all responsible for our own waste, impact and legacy. Let’s be wise.
I had to redo this blog after I picked up Joel Salatin’s “Folks this aint normal”.
“In a desire to get rid of the cow, they want to substitute plants that require tillage. No long term example exists in which tillage is sustainable. It always requires injection of biomass outside the system (like chemical fertilizers) or a soil development pasture cycle. to think that plants which require tillage can build soil like perennial pasture indicates environmental absurdity” 8th Salinen Page 21.
Raise your food locally. Buy from local farmers off the farm. Doing so will make it possible for the farmers to lower their prices over time.
I spent 20 years as a daily newspaper reporter and editor. I am taking courses on microbiology, poultry nutrition and genetics to make my dream for the clean local meat chicken a reality. Please support me by subscribing to this blog (it’s free). With enough subscribers, I can get a book contract!
Also, next year, I plan to sell locally raised meat birds. I have been selling meat chickens until now, but this is something new- my own line of hybrids. If I can get some help I have applied for on the hatching device, plus find a way to go through the NPIP process to be able to check on diseases. I HOPE to sell them $5 each as chicks and then offer to slaughter them and process them after they are fully grown for $5 each.
